One Damn Thing After Another

About the last thing the battered French need is a lurch to the left; but the results from the regional elections held today look as if the Socialist/Communist/Green parties are all doing well by running against the extremely limited reforms of the French social welfare system Chirac's conservative government has been implementing. As these reforms were designed to bring France back into complaince with the deficit rules set by the EU it is not clear what the Socialists would do instead. It has been difficult to take France seriously as a nation for several years, a lurch to the left will move it into position to join the third World in a matter of a couple of decades. A failed Western European state. Sad.
